There is most definitely the aspect of scarcity that you simply don't have with diamonds (except with blue and pink hues).

Most specifically, these include the big three: emeralds from Colombia (the finest/supply is limited), rubies from Burma (extremely hard to find) and sapphires from Burma and Kashmir (extremely rare – they are not being mined).
